Description |
Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929. |

Show ice and sometimes ( lie he ) would 1101 ford it , and ( he lie ) believes , he would be truthful in saying he has crossed every month in the year , although there might be a month or so in the high water that he ( didn't didnt ) cross . He ( doesn't doesnt ) believe the matter of swimming a river is , a difficult or unusual feat for cattlemen . Sometimes in crossing he would hold to the saddle and go along with the horses and ( some some- some ) ¬ , times ride the horse and let it do the swimming . . ( ( B R ) . 4406 . ) ( In Ill ) crossing , there are some animals that will lead off and the others will follow . He ( doesn't doesnt ) cross the river ( with vrith ) wagons unless it can be forded and then just drives into it . There used to ( be he ) ai regular ford at San Island and at the mouth of Comb ( "Wash Wash Wash ) on the , old road , to Gable Camp ( and -nid nid ) he used to ford the river above ( Bluff Bluff' Bluff ) at a number of places . ( ( B R ) . ( 4406-4407 406-4407 ) . ) During his experience there he has known ( of of' of ) heavy rains and floods coming down the side ( can- can ) yons and down the San Juan , but these floods are not a matter of yearly occurrence . He only recalls two floods that he ( terms terins ) floods , and they ( didn't didnt ) occur in the same year . He considers a flood as where the river overflows its banks and ( conies comes ) up on the benches and higher ground where people were farming and above its channel .
