Description |
Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929. |

Show He ( can't cant ) say they made 1070 quite a little money out of river navigation in rowboats or ( non-power nonpower ) boats ; it was very little money ( he lie ) made out of hauling anything ( on oil ) Green River in boats . Really ( weren't werent ) hauling ( any- any ) thing in the big boats . Tried to get somewhere with the boatS , and carrying enough provisions on to get down and back , but ( wasn't wasnt ) hauling anything ( any- any ) where . ( R . 4238 . ) The only party taken out by him on a hauling and exploration expedition , for compensation , was in 1915 , when he made the trip with Dr . Middleton and others . ( R . 4238-4239 . ) As he remembers he was compensated somewhat for taking the Valentines back from ( Valentine's Valentines ) Bottom . His sister was with him on this trip , and notwithstanding his knowledge of the difficulties in going up and down the river , he took her along . ( R . 4239-4240 . ) He knew he was going , ( to te ) bring quite a party back with him , and notwithstanding his knowledge of the difficulties , he took his sister along . He has done very little prospecting and from 1896 to 1916 he worked broken time as a ( hostler's hostlers ) helper and machinist for the Denver and Rio Grande ( West- West ) ern railroad . He has worked on the Green River as a carpenter in putting up pumping and irrigation plants , building boats and water wheels and ( navi- navi ) gating on the Green River .
