They were on the river , as ( he lie ) remembers , ten days , and the trip . ended the 16th of September . ( ( R It ) . 4054 . ) There was only one place on the river where it was very evident that ( bed-rock bedrock bed-roek bedroek ) extended clear acrossthe river , at a very shallow depth . The boats scraped bottom in the best channel that could bo found , and the water must have been less than a foot deep in that place for a distance of fifty feet or more . He remembers a rapid at the mouth of Aztec Creek . because it was the one rapid where they took particular care in running . There were quite a number of small rapids through Glen Canyon , but only three that he remembers particularly . He carried a map with him on the trip and made notes on it . ( R . 4055 . ) The boats used were those described on the Davis ; ; Birdseye , LaRue , Thomas trip . The map he carried was a print of the map of the survey made in 1921 , and it is noted on the map that the trip started ( Sep- Sep ) tember 8th , the first one commencing at mile 118 above Lees Ferry . He noted on the map what he considered a rapid . A rapid is a matter of definition ; that is , really his use of the word would refer to any narrowing of the river that would cause a change in slope and an increase in velocity that would be sufficient to cause waves or wavelets on the water .
