Show to ( its 'its its ) junction with the ( 1068 1063 ) Green River and up the Grand [ Colorado ] River about three miles from the junction . Between Greenriver and the mouth of the San Rafael the trip was a very hard trip because , the boat was just a little too unwieldy and had too much draft , which drew in the neighborhood of two feet at the stern . He could not say how many , times they grounded in that distance but could ( re- re ) call three or four times they were grounded very bad . ( R . 4217-4219 . ) The boat was equipped with a capstan to assist in getting the boat off sand bars and shallows and rocks . The capstan was used either by passing a line to shore , when it could be ( reached rea-ched reached ) , or anchoring the line out in the stream . ( R . 4219 . ) He does not recall having to use the capstan in Labyrinth Canyon . They encountered a lot of trouble ( with witb ) sand bars in Labyrinth Canyon but freed the boat from them by levers . ( R . 4219- 4220 . ) At times they would have to dig and try to catch the water to cut the bars out on the shallow parts ; the boat would drift up on the slopes and kill the water . They would dig a little bit , get out and dig a little way under the upper side , get the current cutting under it so they could turn her around ; they used the ropes to shore there to pull them around . The levers he speaks of are just small poles , trees , three or four inches in diameter , not too big to handle . ( R . 4220 . ) |
