Description |
Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929. |

( R . 4371 . ) He has been in the cattle business practically all of his life and resides at Blanding . ( ( E R ) . 4371 . ) Has never had occasion to use boats on the San Juan ( Elver River ) , except to cross after cattle , but crossed the San Juan at various points and recalls one year when it went dry for about ten days to two ( weeks iTeeks ) . First ( went we-nt went ) into the San ( Juan JuaA ) country in 1880 . Crossed just below Bluff at Sand Island ; river very wide there and does not know of any place it is more shallow . ( ( E R ) . 4373-4374 . ) Does not remember crossing at any point where the water does not come up near a ( horse's horses ) belly . ( ( E R ) . 4375-76 . ) He has a ranch at the head of Comb Wash and believes there were three or four thousand acres there ( similar sinAlar ) in character . He has 160 acres and about sixty have been under actual cultivation . Grazing land on Elk ( Eidge Ridge ) down to the river , is used by cattle . There are no sheep . Some very good dry farms just north of Blanding raising ( wheat w1leat ) . ( ( E R ) . 4377-78 , 4379 . ) He has crossed river on horseback and with wagons . ( ( E R ) . 4385 . ) The country west of Bluff as far as Clay Hill has some big ( canyons eanyons ) that run through , and large hills . . ( ( E R ) . 4378-79 . ) |
