Description |
Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929. |

( R . 4414 . = The area of the ( diy dry ) farm land of this character extends sixteen ( miles niiles ) from Monticello to the State Line [ ( Colorado-Utah ColoradoUtah ) ] ( and aud ) in his judgment is ( twenty twent-y twenty ) or ( twenty-five twentyfive ) miles north and south . He ( doesn't doesnt ) believe there would be more ( than- than ) three or four per cent of the land farmed . He knows it would be very small . On to the south of this area , there is tillable land which is lower than the land he has just described and ( he lie ) knows that it can be covered by the Dolores project . This land lies both east and west of Montezuma creek . ( R . ( 4414--i415 4414i415 ) . ) The section of land west of Bluff that is bounded on the ( west ivest ) by the Colorado River and on the south by the San Juan , has some deep gulches running through it and large mesas or flat country between the gulches . This is all a splendid winter range . He has ( gained gaiiied ) knowledge relative to the ( mineral mineral- mineral ) ¬ ized sections of San Juan County .
