Description |
Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929. |

( . . Airs . ( Newby Neivby ) was with ( him hin-i hini ) on the Little ( Valley Valley- Valley ) trip . Ee recalls the boat ( known knoivn ) as ( Slapping Slapphtg ) Sal . It belonged to H . T . Yokey . This was a ( four-oared fouroared four-oa-red fouroared ) . rowboat . ( R . 3257 . ) ( Tliis Tlds ) boat ( didn't didnt ) have ( any auy ) power on it and would \ draiv 6 or 8 inches . He got ( stnck stuck ) with this boat at Little Valley taking a ( drum druin ) of gasoline down to . ( Wolverton's Wolvertons ) ranch . ( Struck Struelz ) a flat rock out in the river and stuck there . Had quite a time ( getting getting- getting ) loose , but finally made it and went on ( down dovn ) all right . Yokey was not on this trip , but he has made . trips with Yokey . ( ( E R ) . 3257 . ) He ( went -went went ) down with Yokey on the ( Slapping Slappirg ) ( Sal Sal' Sal ) to ( Tenmile Teninile ) bottom ; that is about 42 miles below the Greenriver bridge . He had difficulty on that trip and had to abandon the boat about a mile ( be- be ) low ( Tenmile Telimile ) bottom , and they had to climb out ( of' of ) the canyon and come up overland on foot . This . was in December . ( R . 3258 . ) He ( don't dont ) believe he has seen this boat [ the Slapping Sal ] since that trip .
