Description Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929.

OCR Text 822 At ( Sliock Shock ) Rapid the raft ran aground ( and aud ) was broken up on the rocks . The parts ( were ivere ) caught below , reassembled again , and taken on to Rincpn . ( R . 3152 ) Went upstream in December from ( Rineon Rincon ) to ( Hall's Halls ) Crossing with Mr . Hay ; had ( same saine ) ( proposi proposi- proposi ) ¬ tion of towing , rowing , and poling ; river shallow , waded most of distance and towed boat up ; ( Mr IN1r ) . Hay poled from stern ( R . 3152 ) ; returned to camp April of next year ( R . 3152 ) . Went to Rincon . by pack ( horses liorses ) . ( R . 3152-3153 . ) Supplies from Torrey went to Baker ( ranch rtmeh ) , about ( 12 1-2 ) miles back from Colorado River , on Hall Creek ( Hoxie Creek ) . Made a trip back ( in iii ) ( March 2NIarch ) or April , 1921 ; remained there until May . Went out on ( horseback hoTseback ) to Salt Lake City . There is a trail down to the river through Navajo Gulch . ( R . 3153 . ) Has not been back on Colorado since that time . Did not find oil in ( commercial conin-iercial coniniercial ) quantities . ( R . 3154 . ) ( Cross-exalmination Crossexalmination ) ( R . Vol . 17 , pp . 3155- 3167 ) : It is his ( understanding understandfi-ig understandfiig ) that Shock rapids were ( named mamed ) after Dr . Shock , who is now dead . When the raft was stuck on the rocks there ke got off , the water was only knee deep , and he walked from the raft to the ( left-hand lefthand ) bank of the stream , or the ( right-hand righthand Tight-band Tightband ) bank going down .
