Description Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929.

( 4452-4474 44.52-4474 ) ) He resides at Bluff , San Juan County , ( TJtali Utah ) , where ( lie he ) is Justice of the Peace , is 58 years old and is engaged in the business of farming at the present time . ( R . 4452 . ) He first came into the San Juan section from Pueblo , Colorado , in 1904 , and went to Mexican Hat to placer mine . After ( he lie ) arrived there he went up the river looking over the bars , found a camp stove ( up tip ) above camp some twelve or fifteen miles , he took some logs and built a raft and took the stove down to the camp . He made this trip in the latter part of August . ( R . 4453 . ) He remained at this camp about four or five months , and when ( he lie ) arrived there he ( didn't didnt ) have any boat of his own , but he found a bar on the opposite side of the river and decided to get a boat . He borrowed one from a ( farm faTn-i faTni ) at the mouth of Butler , about five or six ( miles nifles ) above the head of the canyon . The boat belonged to an ( Indian Lidian ) by the ( name maine ) of Jim Joe , and ( he lie ) used the boat there five or six ( months montbs ) . ( R .
