Show taken at the same time 1010 that the survey was being made . ( R . 3975 . ) ( Cross-examination Crossexamination Cross-exantination Crossexantination ) ( Vol . 22 , 3977-3982 ) : The longitudinal scale on Sheet 54 , Exhibit 10 , is 31630 , which means two inches to the mile ; and the vertical scale is one inch to twenty feet , so that the vertical scale is in feet and the longitudinal scale is in miles . If the map were brought to an actual scale or to an equal scale , both longitudinally and vertically , it would be necessary to divide by the ratio of one inch equals twenty feet and one inch equals ( one-half onehalf ) mile . ( R . 3978-3979 . ) If a true picture were depicted , say at Trachyte Canyon , or any rapids there appearing , it would be shown by drawing a line longitudinally the length of the country to be shown ( 'and and ) they would merely be shaded a little more at the elevated part than at the lower part . ( R . 3979 . ) His survey extends back from the river between Lees Ferry and mile 51 , a distance of about ten miles , and in making the survey it was necessary for him to have a pack train , and when working back from the river he employed the pack train to deliver supplies . ( R . 3980 . ) The large boat on which he rode , on its initial trip and other trips , was equipped , he thinks , with a ( twenty-five twentyfive ) horsepower motor . ( R . 3980-3981 . ) It was equipped at first with a screw propeller and later with a paddle wheel , but he was not there when the paddle wheel was put on and he does not recall |
