Description |
Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929. |

He retained his interests in the oil section down there for a few years . There are large deposits of * oil sand in the Elaterite Basin . The oil is ( practi practi- practi ) cally oozing out of the ground in places . There are sands there that are one hundred feet vertical . He ( doesn't doesnt ) know how much deeper it went , and it covers a number of miles . ( R . 5239 . ) The ( Elat- Elat ) erite Basin is accessible from either Hanksville ( or- or ) Greenriver . He would say that you could drive ( -to to ) ( French's Frenchs ) Seep , about eight miles from . the basin . He went in that far ; came in with a buckboard , and . brought six horses with him . He ( doesn't doesnt ) know of any wells that have been . drilled , although they have drilled up on ( French's Frenchs ) . Seep ; but there are some ( well-marked wellmarked ) domes there . ( R . 5240-5241 . ) There are several croppings of oil shales in there ; . but he never made any tests , and has no personal ( knowledge 'knowledge knowledge ) of any tests having been made as to the oil content . He ( doesn't doesnt ) believe that any work has been done to determine their extent . ( R . 5241 . ) There was one trip on which he went back from Townsite Bottoms to Greenriver with ( Ross Ross- Ross ) . Wheeler , in a boat . He also went up the Green . ( River 'River River ) in a rowboat from Townsite Bottoms with Ed , Prothero . He never took a trip with Mr . ( Wolver- Wolver ) ( 'ton ton ) in the Wilmont , but ( he lie ) has taken a trip with ( I'lim Ilim ) in the Navajo . That was a surveying trip ( for- for ) |
