Description |
Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929. |

Show When the ferryboat 803 ( went wellt ) upstream it had a pretty fair load on it ( consisting cousisting ) of wagons but ( when wlien ) the ferryboat came back ( down dowa ) neither of the boats were tied to it , it came down alone . The men ( in iii ) charge were poling the boats and they had some coal on it . ( ( E R ) . 3087 . ) He ( doesn't doesnt ) know how much coal and he saw nothing else but it had been taken up for the purpose of bringing down a load of coal ( and aiid ) ( he lie ) has no recollection of seeing any coal on the ( diaries Cliarles ) H . Spencer except one occasion when there was some coal in the bunker behind the engine . He never saw any coal on the deck ( and aind ) if there was some other trip when the Spencer ( came caine ) down with coal loaded on the deck he did not see it . ( R . 3088 . ) He saw the boat on three separate visits after it ( had hacl ) landed . He never saw it in operation and ( be- be ) tween the times he saw it he ( knew lmeNv ) it was absent from Lees Ferry and ( had bad ) gone somewhere and he had an opportunity to see the deck and was quite curious to look it over whenever it came . ( R . 3089 . ) ( At AA ) the point where he operated the ferry there is one side of the river just ( above abov"o abovo ) the ferry , a wash that comes in and has formed a projection into the river and has washed some big rocks in and this forms an obstruction to the flow of the river on that side , but the bar that ( caused causea ) him trouble ( formed foTmed ) on the opposite side of the river . This wash ( conies comes ) in on the same side of the river as his home was located and is on the right hand side of ( the' the ) river facing downstream . ( ( E R ) . 3089-3090 . ) |
