Description |
Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929. |

Show take a ( picture picature ) of ( the tile ) launch 950 , the main ( qurrant ourrant ) of the Stream being away from the ( bank banI ) at that place . The water there was possibly a foot or two ( deep deop ) , according to notes taken by him . ( R . 3732 . ) ( From Froin ) the point where the boats were launched all of the members of the party walked for a great ( dis- dis ) tance , rarely getting into the boats ; the depth of the water could be judged by whether or not there was trouble with the boats and also at times ( when ivhen ) it was necessary for the party to get into the boats , some of which times they ( would ivould ) strike bottom . The first place where difficulty was encountered was called The Narrows , and was caused by a rise in ( the -the the ) river . ( R . 3733 . ) No difficulty was encountered between Chinle Creek and The Narrows , the water being fairly swift ; but the boats were kept as near as possible in the quiet water . The boats grounded at one place until after they passed the mouth of ( Moon Moon- Moon ) light Creek , where a portage was necessary , at a rapid at Mile 77.5 . This rapid was filled with boulders and it was necessary to portage the equipment and let the boats through empty . The first rapid encountered was at Mile 124 , ( ac- ac ) cording to this notes . ( R . 3734 . ) The boats went * through this rapid ( without ivithout ) ( difficulty difEculty ) At The Narrows a swift current was encountered there was a rise in the river and the water was so , rough it was feared the boats would be overloaded if the members of the party went through in them . .
