( Mc- Mc ) Knight and himself , the motor being used very little on the downstream trip , inasmuch as they were not trying to ( make rruike ) any special speed , and the motor was unattached and in the boat most of the ( time thne ) . ( R . - 4182 . ) A great deal of difficulty was encountered in the . first ( twenty-one twentyone ) miles between Greenriver and the . mouth of the San Rafael because of numerous rapids , and they were in the water most of the time trying to , get the boat down stream . The trip from Greenriver , to the mouth of the San Rafael required three ( days' days ) time and most of the trouble encountered was at the mouth of the San Rafael , where it was ( necessary necessary- necessary ) to wade up and down the stream several times and drag the boat over rocks and gravel to get it down stream , because at that point the channels were so divided it was very difficult to find one continuous channel where the boat would float . ( R . 4183-4184 . ) Between the San Rafael and the junction of ( the the- the ) rivers there was only one riffle that was at all difficult , it being seven or eight miles above the junction . A great deal of trouble , however , was experienced in getting stuck or avoiding getting stuck on sand bars . They were in the water most of the time trying to , find a continuous channel along that stretch . The . total trip from Greenriver to the junction required eight ( days' days ) time . ( R . 4183 . ) The boat was stuck a good many times a day ; hardly an hour passed but that it was necessary to get out and wade the stream |
