Show 10-12 Familiarity with the Green River and with the Grand [ Colorado ] River , the old Grand [ Colorado ] ] River from Moab to the junction , is of value to one who is going on the river , because you get a kind of system for judging the river , gauging the channel , , the distance to sand bars , the depth of the water , , the width of channels ; the eye is trained to observe these things . It helps like experience in anything else . . ( R . 4245 . ) You get a system , you get a rule for laying out your channel , for picking out your channel . . You learn things from that experience that enable you to avoid difficulties in navigation ; the more experience you have on either one of those rivers , the better and more recent knowledge you have of either , the more readily you will be able to navigate , and the fewer difficulties you will have . ( R . 4246 . ) The high spring water cleaned the channel out in places and built tremendous big bars in other places at the same time . The channel of the Green and Colorado Rivers is not left in substantially the same place each succeeding year by the high water . The channel is substantially the same in two succeeding years ; any small obstruction after high water has come down , in the lodging of a tree or stump in the river , will alter the channel . ( R . 4248 . ) Such things happen quite frequently and build bars that will stand through quite high water .
