Description |
Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929. |

Show He has had access to ( 1417 141.7 ) the report of the Forestry Department kept at the Forestry Office at Moab , and the report shows one hundred ( seventy-one seventyone ) million five hundred sixty thousand board feet of lumber on the two forests , being the north and south division of the ( LaSai LaSal ) National Forest . Of this amount , ( sixty-six sixtysix ) million two hundred fourteen thousand is western yellow pine situated on the Elk Ridge , ( fifty-two fiftytwo ) million two hundred ( seventy-seven seventyseven ) thousand is Engleman spruce , and on the combined forests including the Elk Ridge , Blue and LaSal Mountains there are one hundred nine million four hundred ( seventy-six seventysix ) thousand feet of western yellow pine . ( R . 5469 . ) He ( doesn't doesnt ) know the date of the report , but he understands that it is the only record that the forest service has on the extent of the forest , but he ( couldn't couldnt ) say when the survey was made . He went to the forest office at Moab and also saw the Government records since he came [ to Salt Lake City ] and he got the figures from the record . ( R . 5470 . ) In a general way , he has personal knowledge ( con con- con ) cerning mineralized areas in San Juan and Grand County and knows mica when he sees it . ( R . 5471- 5472 . ) About three years ago a mining friend of his brought some samples that he claimed were mica . He submitted them to the Bureau of ( Mines TMines ) and had them analyzed and obtained a Government report concerning mica in the United States . Acting on what he learned in this report , he filed on the claims . |
