Description |
Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929. |

After 1910 it ( Avas vas ) necessary to keep ( an ail ) accurate account and ( re- re ) ( jjort port ) to the county officials of all the crossings and the funds collected . For ten or fifteen years prior to 1910 there was quite a bit of travel into Arizona and Mexico from Utah , more then than at the subsequent period until automobiles started , and he thinks there would sometimes be one hundred to one hundred and fifty wagons a ( year yeax ) cross the ferry . After 1910 , ( vhen -Nvhen Nvhen ) he ran the ferry for the county , it did not begin to pay expenses , did not even pay his ( "wages wages ) . ( R . 3055 . ) In 1925 , 19261 1927 , and 1928 ( an ali ) average of four hundred automobiles a year were crossed . Most of this traffic crossed during ( the Ithe ) deer hunting season in the Kaibab forest . Besides automobiles there ( were vere ) wagons and pack outfits . These vehicles were carried across for compensation and during the years mentioned [ from 1910 on ] ( lie he ) was in the ( em- em ) ploy of the county and was paid a salary .
