After passing mile ten they entered Horse Thief Canyon at mile 24.5 , and left the canyon and entered open country for a short distance down to mile 30 . The fall of the river between mile 20 and mile 30 is 48 feet . The water is swift through Horse Thief Canyon with one ( abrupt abru't abrut ) drop at mile ( 23,3 23.3 ) . ( R . 3998 . ) The drop of the river between mile 30 and mile 40 is 56 feet , and there is an abrupt drop at mile 34.8 and the rest of the water is swift . ( R . 3998- 3999 . ) Between mile 40 and mile 50 the fall of the river is 68 feet . The U , ( ah -ah ah ) line was crossed at approximately mile 39.6 . It was a distance of about 55 ( miles hililes ) from Castle Creek , which is at mile 94 . ( R . 3999 . ) The ( water -water water ) between mile 40 and mile 50 is swift down to mile 47.3 , where there is a decided drop , and at mile 48 there , is another decided drop of ( eight- eight ) tenths of a foot to the mile . He recalls the Little Dolores River , and his map indicates that it is a perennial stream . ( R . 3999 . ) He did not go through West Water Canyon , but made observations from his traverse line along the bench a considerable distance above the water , and elevations of the surface of the water were taken at various breaks along the water surface .
