Description |
Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929. |

Show At ( -Shook Shook ) Bar , the lifeboat 831 was in difficulty * ; ; untied back and forth ; found cracks in ) the bed rock , deep but not wide . ( R . 319D ) Four of thoiai , lialped boat over these . ( R . 3199 ) There is quite a reef farther on down the river . ( R . . 3200 . ) Came upstream with Stanton boats ; took about 3 weeks to ( make niake ) trip ; there were 12 or 13 ( men meii ) ; ; had a ( launch lamich ) , two lifeboats , and two ( flat-bottom flatbottom ) boats ; delivered at dredge just above Bull Frog Rapids ; motor boat did not ( come conic ) up under power . . Rowed , towed , waded in river , man on each end of boat ; hard work getting boats up the river . ( R . 3201 . ) Current is heavy at Aztec Rapids . ( R . 3202 . ) Mr . Stanton located placer ( claims claiins ) all ( way -way way ) ( from froal ) up above Hite to Lees Ferry ; some crossed the river . . ( R . 3201-3202 . ) Brought boat over Aztec Rapids with block ( and aind ) tackle . ( R . , 3202-3203 . ) Sand ( waves wa-ves waves ) on Colorado are not so bad in winter as sand moves all the time ; vorse when river begins to rise in March and April ; river begins to go down , sand accumulates about latter part of August ; ( can caii ) hear them boiling vhen river is ( rais- rais ) ing or falling during high water .
