Description |
Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929. |

Tel . & Tel . Co . Spent a good deal of time on San Juan River , principally at Bluff . ( R . 3350 . ) ( Depth Deptli ) of ( water Avater ) varies in different seasons of the year , when it was high , would never attempt to swim in it . Summer time river real low . ( R . 3351 . ) Has driven a bunch of sheep across the river at ( Cottonwood Cottoiiwood ) Wash . ( R . 3352 . ) In 1916 water on San Juan River was very low , went down to irrigate an alfalfa field , and looked up the canyon and saw a wall of water five or six feet perpendicular rolling down with trees ( and aiid ) ( every- every ) thing like that in front of it ; water hit the bank and went up over it . ( ( E R ) . 3352-3353 . ) July and ( August Aucrust ) seasons of rain ( storms stornis ) ; fall rains ( more inore ) quiet . Rapid rises occur ( in iii ) river and has seen it rise four or five feet in half an ( hour liour ) during July and August . ( R . 3353 . ) San Juan River carries good deal of sand and sediment and ( in ill ) ( summer SUTIMIer ) flood seasons this is the heaviest , carries more than during the spring ruff off . Floods do not ( last Idst ) as long then . ( R . 3353- 3354 ) Has seen ( sand saud ) waves ; form where river has a straight run of ( two t-Nvo tNvo ) or three hundred yards ; waves run high until they hit the bank . ( R . 3354 . ) |
