Show On the ( Columbia CoMinbia ) River 1260 lie operated a ( modern moderii ) , ( up-to-date uptodate ) boat , perhaps twenty feet long , with one and ( one-half onehalf ) horsepower motor on it . He does not believe this boat ( would ixould ) ( make inalce ) all of the rapids on the Colorado River . ( R . 4948-4949 . ) ( Up ITP ) as far as Hite , in his judgment , it would require a ( twenty-horsepower twentyhorsepower ) motor to take a ( twenty-four-foot twentyfourfoot ) boat with a load of a ( ton toil ) or more up the Colorado River , through the sections he is familiar with , and a boat of this kind would not have any difficulty in going up the rapids . ( R . 4950-4951 . ) ( Cross-examination Crossexamination Cross-examiuation Crossexamiuation ) ( R . , Vol . 28 , 4951-4962 ) : He was born in 1885 , and his first boating ( ex- ex ) perience was when he was twelve or thirteen years old . The only difficulty he had with sand bars on the sections of the Colorado River that he ( had bad ) ( ex- ex ) perience on was in going upstream ( ; - ) not much ( diffi diffi- diffi ) culty going downstream . ( R . 4951 . ) He does not recall at any time that he had to get out in the water to get off a sand bar . He has no ( recollec recollec- recollec ) ¬ tion of getting out , either going up or downstream . He has seen other people operate boats and has seen them get in the water to get the boat off a sand bar , but he has only seen this very few times , and they were not people in his party , although it has been necessary in a boat he has been riding for some other member of the party to assist the boat off a sand bar . ( R . 4952 . ) This has ( hap- hap ) pened ( occasionally occasionaily ) when he might be sailing ( up- up ) |
