Description |
Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929. |

Show He ( has lias ) seen the son and 908 the daughter of the settler , ( whose 'whose whose ) ( name naine ) was Valentine , once or twice since . ( R . 3588 ) The bottom where the settlers stopped is ( known 'known known ) as ( "Valentine's Valentines ) Bottom . " ( From Frorn ) the time the journey commenced two days were required going to ( Wheeler's Wheelers ) Ranch , and the two milch cows that ( were Nvere ) on the boat were unloaded at Greenriver because the water was too shallow to cross the bar near the railway bridge , and they were driven down to ( Wheeler's Wheelers ) Ranch . At ( Wheeler's Wheelers ) Ranch they were loaded again ; just below the ranch the boat got stuck ; the cows had to be taken off and were driven up over the canyon wall , around over the mesas about twenty or thirty miles and down to the river . The progress of the boat was uneventful , except for lodging occasionally on bars , where the water was not deep enough to float the boat . He does not ( remem- remem ) ber exactly how long it took to make the trip , but thinks he was about a week going down . ( R . 3589-3590 . ) After reaching his destination he ( climbed chrabed ) out over the canyon walls and went back to Greenriver [ Utah ] on horseback with the Wheeler boys . That is the only trip he ever made on the Green River that far down , but ( has bas ) made shorter trips . . These shorter trips were made from below the mouth of Price River to ( twenty-five twentyfive ) or thirty miles below ( Wheeler's Wheelers ) Ranch . On these trips ( he be ) used a small ( flat-bottom flatbottom ) rowboat , , and sand bars were nearly always encountered . . He |
