Description |
Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929. |

Show The cause of the floods 1102 in that country is from the heavy rains in the higher country , that the river drains , and not from cloudbursts . After he left Bluff in 1903 or ( 1904 19-04 ) , ( he lie ) went to live at Monticello has resided there ever since and is ( acquainted acquaihited ) with the country between ( Monticello i"Nlonticello iNlonticello ) and La Sal and west of the Colorado River . It is a country that he calls Dry Valley , open sandy loam country , level for that part of the country ; it is rolling , of course , but you can get at one end of the valley and can see for miles and miles through it . It ( isn't isnt ) cut up by the big gulches and sudden ( pre- pre ) cipitous places that occur farther out . ( R . 4408- 4409 . ) He is describing the country between Monticello and La Sal and west to the Colorado . It is what he terms a ( winter-range winterrange ) country , and he has ridden through there . The summer range for ( stock stlock ) in this country is ( iu in ) the La Sal ( Mountains Mountain ) , Blue Mountains , and the Elk Ridge , winter range being in Dry Valley that lies between the La Sal and Blue ( Moun Moun- Moun ) tains and on the south and west of the Blue Mountains .
