Show R & x 1257 work in poling , but they poled up every rapid without having to get out ; they did not put a tow line out . . He recalls a place near the mouth of Lake Canyon where there is a ledge of rock that comes down into the river , it extends out into the river and there is a channel at that place . . ( R . 4936- 4937 . . ) The channel is nearest the right side going down and is twenty or ( twenty-five twentyfive ) feet in width . . Going up he did not take the channel but going down went in the channel , and the boat did not strike anywhere . He ( would Nvould ) strike when he was not in the channel , and usually going up the rapids he would stay ( where -where where ) it was slower and easierwater , and lots of times go along the rocks where there was less current . The water that goes through the channel is swift water , and he was looking for the easiest water he could find . ( R . 4938 . ) He had just been down and back over this place during low water . In the fall of ( 1905 19,005 ) he believes was the time he took an option on the Adams ground and placered there . He was in there part of the winter of 1905 and the beginning of 1906 . He was in partnership with Frank Bennett ; they got their supplies from Hite by boat , and he inade trips up and down from there . ( R . 4939 . ) This was the Adams Bar at Red Canyon . He was first in there for Mr . . Adams , and the last time he was on the river with Mr . . Bennett they had a lease on the bar and operated it themselves . . |
