Description |
Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929. |

Show the stage of water and 1190 the wind conditions . ( R . 4716 . ) During the months he was rafting there he ( be- be ) lieves that it would consume one day for the ( jour- jour ) ney . ( R . 4716 . ) When the water was low , it took . more time . The difficulties they encountered in rafting were , sometimes a submerged rock , but the biggest ( diffi- diffi ) culty was with head winds . At one time he lost ( part part- part ) of one raft , but aside from that occasion the rafts all got through . On this one raft that they lost there . were somewhere around twelve thousand feet ( of' of ) lumber and they lost about three thousand feet . ( R . . 4717 . ) -0 He has been from Castle Creek clear through to Moab with a rowboat and on other occasions has been down as far as the Big Bend . The occasion for making these trips was to look after cattle he . had on the river bottom . They had cattle ( on oil ) the river bottom about six miles below Castle Creek . ( R . 4718 . ) He never had to go in more than a ( mile mile- mile ) and a half from the river to see the cattle as there . were canyon ( walls waUs ) that confined them there . When they went back up the river they would take ( their their- their ) boats up with them . He ( doesn't doesnt ) remember any other people that ( went went- went ) up and down that section of the Colorado ( River River- River ) between Castle Creek and Moab .
