Description |
Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929. |

Show houses were constructed 1237 at Elgin after his arrival ; ; he never counted them but there are quite a few people living there now and there is a post office but not a hotel . After lie made his home in Elgin he had occasion to make trips down the Green River , his first trip being in August , 1902 , , he ( be- be ) lieves . ( R . 4873 . ) This was after his return from the east . On this trip he went down to the Cataracts in a skiff ; an ordinary rowboat . It was about sixteen feet long and he believes about a ( four-foot fourfoot ) beam . . R . C . Wheeler went with him , the purpose of the trip being to look over the country and to prospect and they took supplies along with them . They were prospecting for mineral and looking over the land down there . ( R . 4874 . ) He believes they went down to the Cataracts in about two days and did not stop on the way down . They ( had bad ) a good stage of water , went right along and took their time coming back . They stayed at the head of the Cataracts for a day or two looking around and he ( doesn't doesnt ) remember how long it took to come back as it was on the up trip that he did the exploration work on both sides of the river ; did not go far as he was just looking over the river bottoms on the trip . ( R . 4875 . ) He first ( went -went went ) to Greenriver in 1901 instead of 1921 . He lived at Elgin until the fall of 1906 and during which time he took other trips [ on the river ] .
