Description |
Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929. |

( R . 4756-4757 . ) He went above Halls Crossing to ( meet ineet ) ( the the- the ) ( Oheiio- Oheiio ) weth party about thirty miles and when he ( met me''t met ) Chenoweth he ( doesn't doesnt ) believe he had any supplies with ( him hini ) but ( he lie ) delivered supplies upstream from Halls Crossing . ( R . 4757 . ) He ( doesn't doesnt ) know how far upstream he went with supplies but he went . over Bull ( Prog Frog ) Rapid and he also made trips in delivering ( them theiii ) below Halls Crossing . After he got ( on oil ) the river with supplies he went to the San Juan River to get the Trimble Party . The boat was very heavily loaded . There were three of them . and their bedding . The ( bedding 'bedding bedding ) ( weighed -weighed weighed ) better than one hundred pounds and the men weighed ( better 'better better ) than five hundred . They had six or seven hundred pounds of grub . ( R . 4758 . ) He did not have any difficulty on this trip but he got ( 'an an ) awfully bad scare when he went down what is known as Whirlpool Rapids . There is just a little swift water at the bottom with a whirlpool . He took on a little water there and the motor kicked them out . He made other trips to points distant from Halls Crossing downstream . On one he went down to the Huff Party with supplies . This party ( was -was was ) at Rock Creek , he believes . ( R . 4759 . ) He did not load the boat so heavily on this trip down , probably six or seven hundred pounds all told , and he only had one helper .
