Show up the river but ( they t1ley ) had ( 1206 3.206 ) made some ( change cliange ) and ( lie he ) ( had bad ) been consulted by the Edison people as to ( the Uie ) type of boat and the type of paddle wheel to use . ( R . 4774 . ) They had changed the forty ( horse horse- horse ) ( power -power power ) engine and had put in a secondhand Ford Engine . The wheel had been raised from a ( four- four ) w foot to ( an -in in ) ( eight-foot eightfoot ) wheel . He ( doesn't doesnt ) know the horsepower of the engine but it was a regular model ( "T" T ) Ford Engine . ( R . 4775 . ) ( Inadditiontoput- Inadditiontoput ) < ting on the ( eight-foot eightfoot ) paddle wheel ( he lie ) had spaced the paddles a great deal farther apart . ( R . 4776 . ( t" t ) For a period of about ten years he had had ( ex- ex ) perience with paddle wheels on power boats . ( R , 4777 . ) He experimented with different types and ( to -to to ) get a paddle wheel that ( wouldn't wouldnt ) slip through the water it was necessary that it be large enough to hold enough of the water . If the paddles are too close the water ( doesn't doesnt ) get time to run in ( be- be ) tween them because the wheel runs too fast . ( R . 4778 . ) The main thing in a paddle wheel is to not have two paddles in the water at once . He has made a study during his experience on the river of placing and position of his load in order to operate with the slightest possible draft . When he was carrying the heavy loads for the ( gov- gov ) ( ernment -ernment ernment ) in 1914 down to the junction he would push the scow ahead . ( R . 4779 . ) This was done in order to steer it and the load was on the scow ( en- en ) I tirely away from the power boat . |
