Description |
Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929. |

Show material they were working 1270 below the San Juan River was of a low grade and they were making slow progress . Nielson wanted to go down where ( he lie ) could use the hydraulic and they found a place probably fifteen or twenty miles below . ( R . 4983 . ) After Nielson came back up they did not want to move on account of the high water , but he [ Nielson ] insisted on moving , so they went down . They could not pull the boat in to the place they wanted to stop ; the boat was too large , bulky , and heavy and kept right on going to a few miles above Lees Ferry ; never could get the boat back up no more . ( R . 4984 . ) After they got the boat to shore above Lees Ferry , the high water was still on , and they left it . ( R . 4984 . ) Could get downstream all right , but they ( couldn't couldnt ) get up . ( R . 4984 . ) The big boat was guided with a sweep on each end ; a paddle that worked in a clevis so you could not lose it . There is a current on each side of the Colorado River , but if you pull over into the eddy you are all right ; ( "if if ) you can not pull over that you go on down . " They could not handle it in the high flood water that was on . ( R . 4985 . ) The boat was taken all the way down from ( Hole-in- Holein ) ( the-Rock theRock ) with these sweeps . When they started on the trip the water was low , and when they took it below the San Juan and stopped it was still low water .
