Description |
Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929. |

( R . 4345-4346 . ) ( On Oil ) his first expedition oil the Colorado River lie has seen five or six boats plying the ( River Riv-er River ) , both up and down stream . The next year he also saw other boats than those used by the party ( and aiid ) the Moab Garage , going up ( and I-Ind IInd ) down . Did not observe boats in any great difficulties by ( way 'way way ) of sand bars or otherwise . ( R . 4347 . ) ( Cross-examination Crossexamination ) ( R . Vol . 25 , pp . 4348- 4358 ) : ( He lie ) ( thinks tbiliks ) a rapid ( is'Where isWhere ) the water has a ( two- two ) foot fall in fifty feet . ( R . 4348 . ) He did not see any such rapids on the San ( Juan Juail ) , but did see ( sand saiid ) waves , rapid water , and rocks in the river bed ; a motor boat could be brought through there . ( ll . 4349 . ) There were places where ( he lie ) could not row a rowboat up but believes a motor boat could go up . ( R . 4350 . ) He has never operated motor boats only on Colo ¬ rado River . The San ( Juan Xuan ) River is swifter than the Colorado . Has never had his boat hung up oil a sand bar on the ( Sail San ) Juan , but did run on to sand bars , ( and aild ) had no trouble to back around them and find a place out . ( R . 4350 . ) Has helped bring the boat ( upstream upstrea-n-i upstreani ) . ( R . 4351 . ) Where convenient to get into ( an all ) eddy , , he would row upstream , but in the channel it had to be towed . . |
