On y voit une grande attention pour les ménagemens que doivent réciproquement avoir les perfonnes unies par la profeilion des Lectres humaines. On me fait voir, dit M* Or(ï , que j'ay mis deux fois en oeuvre une même penfée. J'avoue cette négligence , & je ne puis qu être oblige à ceux qui ont lu mon Livre avec plus de foin que je nen ay eu inoy-même en le corn-pofant. Sur ce qu'on luy avoit objedé qu'il feifoit trop de cas de quelques Auteurs François dont le mérite eft médiocre, il répond que les hommes étant pour l'ordinaire portez d'inclination ou à blâmer ou à prifer trop ce qui le tait hors de lewr pays, il aime mieux pancher de ce dernier côté que de l'autre, & ctre mis dans Terreur pour juger trop avan-tageufement des Etrangers , que de donner dans le défaut contraire. Dans un autre endroit , il veut pour la défenfe de fon opinion employer un grand nombre d'autoritez5niais il veut adoucir ce qu'il y a de trop dur dans une réfutation dire&e. Je trouve, dit-ili cette façon de penfer tres-ingenieufe ; je m'en ferois meme une règle, que jVjoucerois aux règles ordinaires delà Rhétorique;mais |
