Show DES SCAVANS. 6^ onfuivit le confeil du Duc de Popoli, qui vouloit qu'avant toutes^ chofes on examinât plus particulièrement l'état de la Ville, &la difpofîtion des Habitans. On chargea de cette commilfion le Prince de Montefarchio , que les manières honnêtes & genereufes fai-foient aimer de tout le monde. Il fe mit à la tête de deux Compagnies de Cavalerie , jufqueltéàil joignit les Officiers de:quartier, les principaux Citoyens, & les Seigneurs qui fe trouveront alors à cheval. Notre Hiftorien a cru avec raifbn que li valeur & la fidélité de ces Seigneurs mentaient bien qu'on en conférât les nom'- à la potterité. Il en donne une Lifte à la fia de fôn Livre ; & il y en joint une autre de ceux qui le jour fuivant 24. de Septembre accompagnèrent le Duc de Popoli. Le Prince de Montefarchio ayant fat le tour de la Ville > rapporta au Viceroy qu'il n'y avoit rien à craindre de la part de la populace ni des aurres Habitans ; que le nombre des Conjurez écoit réduit à peu de perfonnes ; qu'ils ne penfbient plus qu'à conferver leur vie à la faveur des re-tranchemens & des barricades dont ils fe cou-vroient ; & qu'enfin fans Tefperance d'un fe* cours qu'ils fe flat'oient de recevoir la nuit Vivante, ils auroient déjà pris le parti de fe retirer. En effet, ils reçurent la nuit un fe-cours de cinquante hommes armez. Cependant le bruit fe répandoit que îe Prin-* de la Cazme3 le Marquis del Vaflo, & |
