Convient-il au contraire de s'ériger en Cenfeur public, & de facrifier les travaux des Sçavans à la crainte de pafler pour trop flatteur ? D'ailleurs, quel eft le chef-d'œuvre fans la moindre tache ? Ou, quel eft le Livre qui fiait rien de bon ? Et faudra-t-il donc ou ne jamais louer fans <plque reftridion , ou ne jamais critiquer uns quelque éloge \ Difons plus , dans ces éloges, dans ces critiques, dans cesjugemens, comment éviter certain air d'autorité,qui ne fied jamais aux particuliers ; ou certaine apparence de préfomption, qui révolte toujours l'orgueil commun ? Les gens de Lettres paf-feroient-ils le feul nom de Tribunal, où l'on s'arrogeroit une Jurifdiâion fouveraine fur ce que leur République a de plus précieux ; leur renommée & leur amour propre ? Ne hefï-tons point à l'avouer. Placé entre les Ledeurs qui s'attendent qu'on juge , & les Auteurs qui prétendent qu'on loue, un Journaliite ne fçait pas trop le vray oani qu'il doit prendre.
