"of The Palate ol‘ aGoofe, lodged within the confines of the upper Beak, 11,, is imbolled with five rowsof bony Prominencies (of which the biggefi are . rliole of the outfide) which I conceive do contribute to break the Aliment, received into the Mouth, into {mall Particles; and beyond thefe bony Protuberancies, is feared a more loft fiibltance, compoled of many finall Glands. The Upper and lower Beak of a Duck, are much like a Goofe, in their . indented Procelies, ( which in a manner refembleth Teeth) feated on the Margents of each lide of the Bill. And all Broad-billed Fowls have the like llrné'curc in reference to their indented Proceffes, which are found in "View" Teal Wiggins, Shufliers, (9%. And the Surface of the Palate of a Duck, amkhilh‘o- dothidifi‘erkicrom that of a Coole, as being mofi: of all plain, without hon ‘. Pi‘ocelies, and hath a Membranous Ridg only running all along the middle ‘lc of the Palate, except {our bony Procelfes placed near the Fillure, Which is drcii'ed on each iide with a row of pointed Glands. The upper region of the Beak of a Bul'tard, is hooked in its Origen, and in its Margcnt on each fide hath a {harp edge; which in pointed Beaked Fowls (askl conceive) ferveth in {lead of indented Proceflbs: So that the edges of the upper and lower Beak being conjoyned, do clole the Mouth, and help to detain and break the Aliment. The Palate of a Buliard, feared between the Confines of the Beak, be. fing‘f: "D‘g' ginncth in a Point, and endeth in much larger Dimenfions, and is compoltd hermit" of three Rows running in length, and the outward confifiing oi white "M 7796 Tel/ire; of Other flnimalrg 2.2, 1 The Palate of a Pike is Full of various Protubera‘ncies, garnilhed with greater and 1er Alperities; and its Circumference on Each fidé (if the An; terior part, is cncompalled with fine Cartilaginous Margents', endina in thin Edges : And the Palate, feared within thefe curioiis Enclolurbs,‘ isofortified in its fore part with three bony Protuberancies +, of which thofe of *T‘ Y'F'S- " the fidesare broadel‘t and lhortefi, all befer with pointed {harp Teeth,of which m. the longefi are near the bony Interfepiment +, Which is double for Tome ""1743"; » fpace, and afterward is united, and f0 palleth the whole length of the Skull "M like a Beam, to lirengthen its lower Region. In the Interfiices of the Anterior part of the Stptum, whereit is divided, is feated a third Protuberance + this-Fish beliuclded for the molt part with fine {hort Teeth, and are longer only in the origen of this rough Prominence. The Palate of a Pike is outwardly covered with a thin red Membrane , 'l'TltbfirFig-Io full of {mall Plicatures, and is more inwardly enwrapped With a Glandulous g5" Expanlion, asa Contexture of many Miliary Glands, and the hinder part of the Palate is enclofed with Guills +, befet in their lower region with fTflthigq. many {hart Teeth, and the polierior part of the Palate feated within thefe "W" Guills, is vailed with a thin Membrane outwardly, and more inwardly with a more thick Glandulous body, then that relating to the Anterior part of the Palate. . The Palate of a Thomback being broad in the midli, and narrow in‘ both The palm of pointed Procelles, make their progrefs in Bevil Lines, or rather t‘emicircular, Extreamities, is overfpread with a Glandulous fubltance, invefled with a, ‘ "W"‘ba‘k' and are united in both Extreamiries to the middle Row, which piiieth the length of" the Palate in a flraight Courfe; and is framed of many joynted Procefles, and beginneth in the middle between the ()rigens of the outward Rows of white pointed Procell'es, and terminates in the middle of the tranl- vale Comblike Rows; and within each fide of the outward Rows, are fcattered here and there confulZ‘dly, lome white pointed Prominencies. Be-t thick white Membrane; and on each {ide of the Holes, leading out of the tween the upper and lower tanks of Traniverie Procefibs, is feared on each fide of them a red Glandulous fiiblhnce, confifiitig of Many finall Protubcrancies, which I conceive are minute Conglomerated Glands, furnilhed Mouth into the Nofirils, is feared a {mall flattilh oblong Gland, and in the middle between thefe two Glands, may be difcovered another Gland ( of round ihape, lodged in a proper Cavity) which being opened, I found full of Vilcid Matter. The Palate of a Fire, or Sting Flair, is enwrapped in two Membranes, ThQPalm °f the outward is thick, and the inward more thin; and between thele Coats "Imam" is lodged a Glandulous Expanfion ( which is fomewhat plumper toward the upper Mandible) and is a Compofition of numerous fmall Glands. The Palate of a Holybut, for the moli part confil'reth of a thick Mem- TthaIatc of with Excretory Duffs. The Fiflure of the Palate relating to a Bufiard, is fringed on each lidc with a row of white pointed Procclles, running in {traight Lines in length for an Inch, and then are befet on each fide for half an Inch, with a row of brane, covering the Arch of the Mouth, and is loofe an Inch, 01' more, near "Wm" Tranlverfe ProceITes, and the Filiiire at lalt endeth with a Semicircular rank of Comblike ProcefiEs. the Tongue, and clofeth the entrance of the Mouth, intercepting the pal: The upper and lower part of the Beak, appertaining to a Turkey, and all narrow Beaked Fowls, have no Indentments on eachkfide, but only "1er Edges, which are very conducive to the detaining and breaking of Aliment. The Palate feared within the Margents of the upper region of the Beak: is Glandulous, and beautified with four rows of Comblike Proceiles (which may be to denominated from their refembling the fine Teeth of a Comb) having the figure of two fides of the Triangles, and wanting the Bafc, ""1 crols the Palate; the two firii Ranks are very final], and frarce dilcernihlci Phi two Ialt are more Vifible, and elpecially the lafi, which determine the a are. The Fillure of the Palate in a Turkey, is much longer then in a Duck, or Goofe, running the whole length of it, and is encircled on each fide with {mall pointed Proccffes, which are defefiive in a Goofe. Th c the entrance of the Mouth, and confineth on the Teeth of the upper Man- dible hanging down in a Semi‘circular Figure, adjoyning to the Surface of lage or the Water into it : And alfo near the Teeth of the lower Jaw, another looie Membrane is feared, anfivering that above in Figure, and under this Coat, and between the loofe Membranes of the upper and lower Mandiblcs and Teeth, is lodged a Glandulous fubflancc; out of which be. ing fqueefed, deltilleth a quantity of \"ilcid Matter. Somewhat beyond the Palate of a Holybut, are feared, as I conceive, two other Glands, which are of a {oft white fubliance; and alfo near the termination of the Palate, about the Fauces of a Skait, on both {ides of the origen of the Skin, are lodged two Glands, about three Inches long, and an Inch bread, Which being affixed to the tides of the Chin, by the interpofition of thin Membranous Filaments, do terminate into the beginning of the Guler: And thefe Glands having Excretory VeiTcls, through WhiCh 1?un is conveyed into the Cavity of the Gulet, as a Ferment of Conco-a ion.
