Figure 19. 2.4.1.3 Examination of histopathology An examination of the histopathology of liver and kidney tissues from 71 small mammals was conducted as a general assessment of small mammal health (Table 24). Fetuses from Six to eight individuals from each sampling site were examined, except at site CC1 where only five mammals were captured. For species other than Peromyscus, all captured individuals were submitted for examination. The detailed report is found in Appendix 11. 11 of the 71 animals were also examined both grossly and microscopically. Histological changes generally associated with metal toxicosis include the degeneration of kidney tubules and glomeruli, general deterioration of the architecture of the kidney, dark staining areas in the nucleus of the kidney tubular cells (intranuclear inclusion bodies), inflammation of the I,iver, and increased amount of blood congestion in both organs. These changes can also be associated with other disease agents, such as bacteria or parasites, and so must be correlated with elevated tissue concentrations of the metal(s) of concem to make a definitive diagnosis of metal-related effect. Therefore, animals that were examined histologically also had a portion of their liver analyzed for concentrations of the CoCo ecological planning and toxicology, inc. 57 |
