Site Characterization and Samling Activities • • • 7. 4/29/98 11/5/98 12/22/98 06/03/99 Magna Concentrate Loading Site (M06): A total of 27 characterization samples were collected from the site. Samples consisted of 13 composites and 14 vertical channel samples from seven trenches. The samples were analyzed for total metal arsenic, cadmium, copper, lead, and and SPLP for the RCRA 8. Seven of the samples exceeded the action level for total selenium, metal arsenic and one for lead. All samples analyzed for SPLP were below the TC levels. A removal of the contaminated material is scheduled for the second week of July. Return Canal and Pipeline Corridor (S11): A total of 67 characterization samples were collected from the Return Canal site. Samples were collected on 500 foot transects consisting of shoulder and canal sediment samples. The samples were analyzed for total metal arsenic, and and SPLP for RCRA 8. All canal sediment sample analysis cadmium, copper, lead, selenium, were adjusted for moisture. Thirty-four of the samples exceeded the action level for total metal arsenic. Further characterization of the site is scheduled for July. Arthur Step-Back Repository: As required in the Work Plan, samples will be collected from the Repository as material is placed at a rate of one per 20,000 cubic yards. During this reporting period, three composite samples were collected and analyzed for arsenic, cadmium, lead and selenium, for totals and SPLP during this reporting period. Schedule Adjustments • As required in Paragraph 36 of the AOC, Kennecott outlined a project schedule in the Work Plan. In the Work Plan, Kennecott set as a milestone the Smelter Area Demolition to be completed during the 1998 construction season. Due to equipment sales and Kennecott Smelter operational needs for temporary covered storage, the completion date will need to be adjusted through 1999 construction season. Also, due to increased quantities of WWTP Sludge from original estimates, the final date for completion of the WWTP Sludge Project will be adjusted. Kennecott and their Contractors are currently preparing an adjusted schedule. If you have any questions or project concerns, please contact me at 801-569-7054 or Tom Nannini at 801-5696512.
