The classification of the Selachians which I propose is as follows :- Subclass S E L A C H II* Series I. TREMATOPNEA.+ Order 1. PLEUROPTERYGrll. Family 1. Clacloselachidce. Cladoselachus. Family 2. Cladodontidce. Cladodus, Symmorium. Order 2. ACANTHODII. Family 1. Acccnthoessidce. Acanthoessus, Chiracanthus. Family 2. Diplacanthidce. Diplacanthus, Climatias, Ischnacanthus. Order 3. ICHTHY0T0MI. Family 1. Pleurcicanthidce. Pleuracantlius, Xenacanthus. Order 4. EUSELACHII.J Suborder 1. PLEUROTREMATA.§ Division 1. N o t id a n o id e i . Family 1. Chlcimydoselachidce. Chlamydoselachus. Family 2. Ilexaiichida?. Ilexanchus, Heptranchias. * I use the word Selachii in the same sense as did Muller in 1846 and as the equivalent of the S^laciens of Cuvier in 1817 (R£gne Anim. ii. p. 121). f The names Tr£matopn£s and Chismopn&s, the latter an obvious misspelling, proposed in 1806 by C. Dum^ril with a wider significance, may be Latinised and applied to the two series of Selachians. x The Petalodontidai and Psammodontidse, comprising several genera from Permian and Carboniferous strata, appear to pertain to this Order, but cannot be assigned a definite position. § The Pleurotremata and Hypotremata are equivalent to the Pleurotremes and Hypotremes of C. Dumeril. |
