L'Auteur débute parPorigine des Heures Canoniales, telles à peu prés qu'elles fonté-tablies aujourd'hui parmi nous. Il la fait remonter jufqu'aux temps Apoftoliques \ il la trouve dans l'obligation de 'prier fans ceffe , fi fort recommandée aux Chrétiens, & fur-tout à ceux que leur profeffion d'Ecclefîafti-ques y appelle plus particulièrement. Il dit qu'en marquant chaque partie de la journée par quelque partie de l'Office,on fut cenfé iatisfaire au précepte de prier toujours. Il auroitjpû remonter, ce femble , encore plus haut, & faire voir que dans la diflribution des heures deftinées à la Prière,les premiers fidelles n'ont fait qu'imiter, comme en bien d'autres çhofes3ce qu'ils ont trouvé tout établi depuis long-temps parmi les Juifs. Il en marque la tradition depuis les premiers temps jufqu'à nous , tant dans PEglife Latine, que dans la Grecque 5 &il appuyé cette tradition d'un grand nombre d'autoritez.
