Herr Pierre Chouteau und einige Damen seiner Familie begleiteten uns bis St. Charles* Man hatte als Signal zur Abfahrt einige Kanonenschusse abgebrannt, worauf sicb die Bewohner von St. Louis in Menge am Ufer versammelten, unter ihnen auch &G Saukis in ihrem originellen Anzuge, so wie einige halb civilisirte Kickapu-Indianer. Von den ersteren entwarf Herr Bodmer interessante Abbildungen, wovon die Vignette dieses Capitels eine Probe giebt.
