Show 64 to the niche issue and the impact of participating in a governing coalition - it does seem to indicate that the choices made by the niche parties, how dedicated to remain to their issues, and how these interact with the choices of mainstream parties, like influencing coalition partners, are insightful, but also complex. Interaction of Mainstream and Niche Attention to the "Big" Niche Issue To try to capture some of this complexity, and a key aspect of the strategic interaction model, it is relevant to interact the strategic choices of the mainstream parties and niche parties. Key contributions of this project are to not only add in the strategic choices available to niche parties, but also to see how the interaction of mainstream and niche strategies play out in the given institutional and socioeconomic context. I expect, in combining the previous two hypotheses, that niche parties will fare better electorally when they are both committed to their "big" niche issue and mainstream parties dismiss or adopt an adversarial approach to the niche issue. Hypothesis 19: As niche parties maintain or increase their dedication to their "big" niche issue, their electoral success (percent of the vote, number of seats) will increase if also in the presence of a dismissive or adversarial strategy by mainstream parties. Like with the interaction terms discussed in the previous section on socioeconomic variables, charts and figures will yield little insight here as they are unable to capture the interaction, so a more lengthy discussion will be reserved for Chapter III when more advanced techniques will be employed. |
