Llcgaron a este rio una ora antes que amaneciese, porque Montel}uma los auia hecho caminar toda la noche. Llegados aUf, Montei}Uma, enemigo de perder tiempo, mand6 a los capitanes que lucgo sin dilacion se hiciesen munchas balsas y puentes de raices de arboles y de carrigo, que en u lengua se Haman acatlapechtli, que propiamente son balsas de canas y pucntcs, como red, de raiccs que llaman cuauhmatlatl, y hechas con la diligencia po ible, en lo qual gastaron todo aqucl dia. Estando en esto asom6 el exercito de los contrarios, que salia por un lado de la ciudad, muy en 6rden y gente muy Iucida, y puestos en ala junto ala primera corea, que era de quatro bragas en ancho y de tres en alto, todos fuera de la ciudad en el campo, Montel}uma mand6 que solos los mcxicanos, con los chalcas y tlaluicas, saliescn a elias, y quel tezcucano se estuviese quedo y el tepanecatl, basta quel mandase lo que auian de hacer.' El mex.icano sali6 al enemigo, el qual le sali6 a receuir con muy buen dcnuedo; y trauando una cruel batalla, lo mexicanos por llcgar al muro y los de la ciudad por defendello, murio mucha gente de am bas partes, y reciuiendo los mexican as gran detrimento de las muchas piedras que de las murallas arrojauan y varas, les fue fon;ado retirarse, porque auia turado la batalla casi todo el dia, q uedando los de Ia ciudad victoriosos en alguna man era . |
