Show 212 vincias se crian de guayauas, peruetanos, <(apotes amarillos y negros y blancos, aguacates, batatas de dos y tres generos: tributauan des~ tas prouincias todos los dias desta vida grandes cargas de rosas hechas y adere<(ada · de mill diferencias de rosas, porque las ay en esta tierra caliente muchas y muy olorosas, unas mejores que otras de delicado olor: juntamcnte trayan de los arboles destas rosas con sus raices para plantar en las casas de los sefiores, y esto todo era tributo no mas de para mostrar la grandeza y autoridad mexicana y para llamarse y ser tenidos por senores cle todo lo criado, asf en el agua como en la tierra. Esto es quanto {t lo que tocaua y a lo que pertenecia al vestido y comida, pero auia prouincias que tributauan armas de algodon, muy bien estofadas y colchadas, tan tupidas que una tlecha ni una vara arrojadiza no la pasaba; rodelas de varas tostadas, tan recias y tan tupidas que un espada no les bacia nenguna mella: estas rodelas por la haz eran muy galana de plumeria de todas colores, en ella pintadas de la mesma pluma y de chapas cle oro bruilido; muy galana armas y resefias de hechos antiguos y de ydolos y de sus efiore antiguo , que aun el dia de oy la usan y las guardan para memoria de us antiguallas y hechos pasados y L senores: tributauan arco grandes y gruesos, flechas de diuersos generos y manera ; tributauan piedras redondas muy bien labradas para las hondas y honda de nequen sin n{unero, nauaja blancas y negras para espadas, pedernales para puntas de flechas y dardos, en fin, imag{nese todo lo que se puede imaginar que en esta tierra podra auer, que tanto se tributaba a Mexico, hasta panales de miel y las mesmas abeja en sus colmenas, grandes cantaros de miel blanca y de esotra prieta, resina de los arboles, tea para alumbrar, tizne para tiznarse y embijars , y las prouincias que carecian de bastimcntos, ropa y de todo lo dicho, tributauan mo<(as, mochachas y mochachos, las quales repartian los senores entre si, y aquella:s llamaua11 esclauas, y asi ca i todas las tomauan por mancebas y estas parian, y son los hijos de esclauos que algunos dicen. Todos estos tributos .que aquf e contado y muchas cosa mas que la ystoria pone asi en confuso debaxo de una generalidad, que induye y cifra todas las cosas criadas, tributauan las prouincias, ciudades, villas y pueblos de la tierra al rey de Mexico, y la cau a que pone para que oviese obligacion de tributar dice de esta rna· nera: tributaban las prouincias todas de la tierra, pueblos, villas y lugares, despues de ser vencidos y sujetados por guerra y compelidos por ella por causa de que los valerosos mexicanos tuvie en por bien de baxar las cspadas y rodelas, y cesasen de lo matar a ellos y a los viejos y viejas y niflos por redemir sus vi~as y por euitar la de truicion de sus pueblos y menoscauos de sus haciendas. A esta causa se dauan por sieruos y vasallos de los mexicanos y les t1·ibutauan de .todas las co as criadas debaxo del cielo, de oro, plata, joyas, piedras, plumas, armas, manta , cacao, algodou, maiz, frisoles, uauhtli, pepitas, chile de toclo genero, harina de toda semillas, petates, asentadero , lefla, carbon, lo<(a de todo genero, cotaras, piedra , madera, cal, cac;a de todo genero, gallinas, volateda, aguila ' leone ' tigres, gatos monteses, de todo gcnero de animales bravo y domesticos, cueros de animales curado y ricos, culebras grandes y chicas, bravas y man as, pescado frescos y en barbacoa, de todo tanta cantidad, que no faltaua dia desta vida que no entraua en la ciudad de Mexico gente forastera con gran cantidad de todas estas cosa , asi de prouision como de riqu <5a para el rey y para los grandes senores, lo qual ganaron con u udor y trauaxo y con la fuerza de su pecho y de su caue~a y bra<(O, sujctando todas las naciones y trayendolas en perpetua escla vonia y seruidumbre; el qual exercicio y oficio les dex6 el dios Vitzitopochtli, prometiendoles su fauor y ayuda.
