Show 5276 Chaffin- D 3288 Q What year was it? A 1896 or 1897. Q What months? A It was in the fall of the year. Q What kind of boat did you have? A We had a small row boat. Q Just tell me about the trip down with reference to rapids and sandbars and so forth. A The trip down there, the water was in pretty good shape, wasn't extremely low at that time when we went down. When we got down below the San Juan, we had a lot of sand waves, a lot of different places where we had trouble finding the way through with the small boat. Q Was it necessary to go overboard at any time to push off these bars? A yes; we would get on them and push our boat off; at times run up on the bars where you figure the channel was but were mistaken; go back and finally find a small channel; we always pretty nigh found a channel for the small boat. Q Do you recall about what point on the river you encountered those difficulties? A No, I don't, not that trip. Q Do you know where the Aztec rapids are? A yes sir. Q Was it above or below that? |
