Show 5275 Chaffin- D 3287 water. Understand me, the Lake canyon rapid, that is not a smooth surface rock, it is rough, awful rough. Walking over it you can't walk straight across there without dropping out of sight. If you went to walk straight across you would go in a crack out of sight in places, probably find some places you could step out of six inches of water, maybe less or maybe more. Q For what distance down the river did you to work this raft until you got off this ledge? A We got the raft on two or three times so we had to pry her off, and unload it once for, I would say, maybe one hundred yards, something like that, maybe two hundred yards. Q During the time you wore in that part of the Colorado river, during the years 1895, 1896 and 1897, did you find any increase in the number of prospectors who had come in there? A In the winter of 1894- 1895, there was something over one hundred prospectors there along from Nite to Hall's Crossing. We got a petition to get a post office there. I think we had something over one hundred signers, as near as I remember. Q In one of these years did you make a trip to Lees Ferry? A Yes sir. Q Who went with you on that trip? A Ed Meskin. |
