Q Did you ever have occasion to take any of these boats up stream? A No sir. Q Did you see any of them taken up stream? A Yes. Q By what method were they taken up? A Well, they towed them along the bank, and when the wind was fairly good they would sail up the river. Q Have you ever been up on the boats yourself? A No sir, not between Good Hope and Hite. Q At what points have you been on the river in a boat? A Good Hope to the Olympia bar. Q Where is Olympia bar with reference to Good Hope? A It would be about twelve or fifteen miles below, it,-- something like that. Q In taking a boat from Good Hope down to Olympia, did you encounter any difficulty in the operation of the boats? A Went right along nicely. Q How about bringing the boats back up, if you did? A It wasn't so easy. Q What method did you take to bring them up? A At first there was quite a heavy wind, and we set up a sail, put a pole up and hung a piece of carpet on it; that's all |
