Show 5220 F. Bennett- C 3232 A No sir. Q By the way, this copper mining that you did was just where with respect to Hite? A It is about nine miles nearly due east; it is what is called white canyon, near what is called the Mormon trail, that went up by the natural bridge to Bluff City. Q That was a vein of copper, was it, or a bed? A Bedded in flat veins. Q Sandstone bed? A Sandstone bed, yes sir. Q How much are did you mine? A I shipped several cars; I don't remember now; I shipped a number of cars; it was during the high price of copper, about the time we went into the war; things got so high I couldn't stand the freight, sixty- five dollars a ton out of these. I couldn't stand it, and had to quit. Q When you say you took out several cars, do you mean railroad cars? A Yes sir. I think I shipped three cars, if I am not mistaken, -- two or three, to Tooele. I shipped two or three, or three or four, to the American. There is a record of all those. I don't remember just how many I shipped. Q Just how did you get that one out? Tell us the route it traveled in order to reach the smelter. A I took it out of the mine -- the mine was up on a hill, and it didn't pay me to build a wagon road up there. |
