Show 5271 Chaffin- D 3283 supplies, and I couldn't get a boat back up the river and get to the camp, and had the supplies come in at Hall's crossing. Q Why couldn't you get the boat up? A I needed some more supplies. I had these teams river to have it bring the supplies down, the stuff that was perishable. I figured on building a raft to bring my stuff. I couldn't get the boat up at the head of Shock bar. Q Why not? A On account of the river was so swift I couldn't get a small boat up, or couldn't catch a day the wind blowed, and couldn't bring her. It was quite high water at that time. So I took same burros that a fellow named Jack Butler had. I hired his pack train and went across over to Hall's, and we built a raft there and went over to where this stuff was. And then I took the stuff back across the river that I wanted to take down, that I could carry on the boat. I had sixty- odd sacks of oats. So I built a big raft, and put the oats on it. And then I took the burros and went down the river overland about ten or fifteen miles, and at four o' clock this man was to cut this raft loose. We was to be ready with the boys to catch it. When it got there it had in sixteen sacks of oats. |
