Show 5211 F. Bennett- D 3223 after that I went down the river to the mouth of it, and went up the San Juan river. I was trying to get up through the canyon of the San Juan. Q From Hite to the mouth of the San Juan river what means of transportation did you use? A Had a boat, small boat, I and another man. Q Do you recall any of the incidents of that trip? A No, I can't recall anything out of the ordinary. Q When you got to the mouth of the San Juan, how did you go up the river? A The San Juan was unusually low, very low, and we started to row up , but only rowed a little ways, and got out. Wasn't very cold, we got out and waded the river and took our boat, one at one end, one at the other. Q Why didn't you continued to row? A Couldn't row. Too much sand; too many bars; wasn't water sufficient. The water was slow, and we had to work our way through the sand, more or less, going up there, and considerable current, too. Q How long did you remain up there in the San Juan river? A Got up there, we had our supper, drifted back down that night. Had no trouble going back down. Where we went up through, started the sand and got a channel, and we went right back down the channel that was made when we went up. |
