Show 5181 F. Bennett- D 3193 The supplies were taken on down. It was loaded with supplies. Q In other years which you were there, did you notice any ice gorges? A Yes, I have saw ice gorges there several times, different places; where the water is still, and these islands come, it will start to freeze over there, and keeps gathered; it will keep backing up. And sandbars it gets further back up there is some current in there, piles the ice on top. At Good Hope I have seem it piled fifteen feet on that island. When the gorge would break, it would shove the ice up, so the driftwood high on the river must have been caused by those ice gorges. Q In portions of the Colorado river you saw down there in the canyon, did the river ever freeze over solid? A I have crossed on the ice, but it was more or less from where it had caught the cakes, and they would freeze together. I don't believe the ice forms there, not to my recollection. It will begin forming on the sides. Pretty soon a cake of ice will catch in there, and another one pile on top of it. They will freeze together. I don't think the ice ever freezes so you have solid ice across. Q These ice gorges you have spoken about, how far do |
