Show 5206 F. Bennett- D 3218 A Only the time when I went down with Mr. Stanton, we had troubles in getting the life boat down through there. That is the same point. Q Do you recall, when you were with Stanton, as to what distance you discovered this ledge to exist up and down the river? A Nothing other than I say they was hung up on this before I went back where they were; how far they had worked the boat down, I don't know. I don't think they had worked down but a little ways. I think we went one- eighth of a mile before we got it so it was absolutely clear and go on down the river. Q Basing your answer on your twenty years' experience down there on the river, did you make any observations with reference to the channel, as to whether or not it shifts from time to time? A Yes, it shifts sometimes. Q Just explain that a little to me, please. A As a general thing the shift occurs in high water or immediately after high water, when it begins to go down. If there is some obstruction, kind of a corner of the river coming down here, it causes the current to run over and bore in under that. Perhaps it will shift over one- third or half the distance of the river. |
